Disaster can strike with little to no notice, that's why the best way to be ready for any emergency is to have a plan. To help Canadians stay safe, governments and broadcasters have built a system to bring more alerts to the population, faster.
Developed in partnership with federal, provincial and territorial emergency management officials, plus Environment Canada and the broadcast industry, Alert Ready is operated by The Weather Network.
The system allows officials at each level of government to issue a wide range of public safety messages in the event of potentially life-threatening events. Television and radio broadcasters across the country will then distribute the alerts to their audiences.
The type and number of alerts will vary from province to province – and severe alerts are expected to be infrequent. This can include, but is not limited to more common alerts such as tornados, floods and wild fires to other less frequent, but equally dangerous events like biohazards or landslides.
Be sure to visit AlertReady.ca for information about the types of alerts, examples of the alert notifications, links to provincial and territorial emergency preparedness resources and helpful videos to help us be prepared for emergencies.
