Maine To Remove Hunting Age Limit

Currently in Maine, children younger than 10 can’t go hunting.  But in just a few months that will change.  Governor Paul LePage recently signed a law allowing children of any age to hunt with adult supervision.  The law will take effect in 2016.

This is good news for preppers and survivalists in Maine.  Many of us strive to teach our kids survival skills like hunting.  It teaches them discipline and an appreciation for where our food comes from.  And, when SHTF, it could just keep them alive.

Maine joins 39 other states that allow kids of any age to hunt with adult supervision. Hilliard’s bill won strong support from the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee and sailed through the House of Representatives without debate, but got hung up in the Senate where the some members had concerns about the bill.

To reassure Senators, Senator Paul Davis, the Senate chair of the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, proposed an amendment stating plainly that the junior hunter under the age 10 must be “under the effective control, within 20 feet, of an adult supervisor.” With an extra push, and the adoption of that amendment, the bill won the support of Senators by a vote of 26 to 6. The House agreed to the amendment and sent the bill on to the Governor, who signed it yesterday.

Do you take your children hunting?  Let us know in the comments.

30 Items Every Prepper Should Carry When Traveling

30 Items Every Prepper Should Carry While Traveling - Backdoor Survival

This is the time of year when families travel to visit friends and relatives near and far.  When taking a road trip, it is easy to throw a bug-out-bag and extra food and clothing into the trunk of your car but what if you are traveling by air?  Not only do you have those pesky baggage weight limits to deal with, but you also have the scrutiny and probing eyes (and sometimes hands) of the TSA to avoid.

Can you imagine what might happen if you showed up at the airport with a fully stocked survival kit?  I am being just a wee bit facetious but these days, you can never be too sure what will happen if someone decides to label you as a prepper.

30 Items Every Prepper Should Carry When Traveling - Backdoor Survival

TSA notwithstanding, today I would like to share a reminder that no matter where you go, you should include some basic preps in your carry-on or in your check-through luggage so that no matter what, you will be prepared to deal with bumps along your journey.

Here in list form, and in no particular order, is a list of 30 items every prepper should carry when traveling.

Survival Items You Should Carry When Traveling

1. A wise traveler not only carries a passport, but also a photocopy of the passport and a scanned version on a laptop, CD, or .

2. Your health insurance or Medicare card.

3. Your driver’s license, proof of car insurance, and the 24 hour claims number for your insurance company.

4. Two credits cards housed in two different places (in case one gets lost or is stolen) along with the customer service numbers for the credit card companies written down and stored someplace other than your wallet.  You might want to consider for your credit cards.

5. A list of emergency contacts, including telephone numbers and email addresses.

6. A prepaid long distance card for making calls when there is no cell phone service or when the calls will be too expensive due to roaming charges.

7. A few blank checks or traveler’s checks plus some funds in the local currency (if you are traveling out of the country).

8. Prescription medications with at least 3 days over and above the number of days you plan to be gone.

9. An emergency first aid kit including bandages, pain medication, instant hot/cold packs, antibiotic ointment, lavender essential oil, an anti-diarrheal, allergy medication, heartburn medication, and anything else that you commonly use.

10. Insect repellent or essential oil alternative.

11. Sunscreen.

12. Protein or snack bars.

13. Travel tissues and a travel sized roll of TP (you would be surprised at how often this “essential” will come in handy.)

14. Baby wipes or my favorite, .  You can wash up pretty well with these in the event you can’t take an actual shower.

15. Hand sanitizer plus sanitizer wipes (Those tray tables on planes are horrifyingly filthy – they very frequently are the home for fecal matter.)

16. A and possibly an as well.

17. or Swiss Army-style knife. (This will have to go in your checked luggage)

18. .

19. An emergency whistle. This is my favorite,.

20. Paracord in , , or lanyard form for portability.

21. Water for ensuring safe, drinkable water if supplies at your destination are compromised.

22. A portable water filter and pouch, like this .  The pouch takes up very little space when empty but would give you a clean container for your filtered drinking water in an emergency.

23. A small roll of duct tape and some tie wraps (also called cable wraps).

24. Mylar .

25. A for every member of your group.

26. to wear when seated near obviously sick people (coughing and sneezing) while using public transportation.

27. Batteries (or rechargeables plus a battery charger).

28. Your cell phone charger or a USB cable to use as a charging cable.

29. Key passwords to access email accounts and online financial data.

30. Pre-printed labels with your home address, home phone number, and email address. Include one or more of these labels in each checked bag.

Extra Credit Bonus Items for the Traveler

As a proponent of essential oils, I travel with a small pouch containing my most important oils including (a thieves like protective blend), lavender, and melaleuca (tea tree).  I also carry some and .

Something else I carry with me is a tin containing a portable survival kit.  This portable kit contains a number of the items I would normally have in my travel kit but has the added advantage of allowing me to throw it in my pack or handbag while I am out and about at my destination.  You can put your own emergency kit in a tin together.  You will find some ideas in the article .

Another bonus item is solar lighting. I throw both a and my in my bag. They are not as small and portable as a flashlight, but they operate without batteries and can be used in a variety of situations to provide an abundance of light as well as emergency signaling.

Since everyone’s needs are different, you might find some additional ideas for your travel kit in the article .

Here some some air travel tips from Daisy Luther, the author of that article:

Pay attention to the flight attendant. Aren’t you going to feel kind of stupid if the plane crashes and you have no idea where the nearest exit is? Take 2 minutes out of your life to listen when the flight attendant goes over the safety information.

Dress appropriately. Whenever I see fellow passengers wearing flip-flops, high heels, or other inappropriate footwear, I cringe. You should always wear shoes that are sturdy and comfortable enough for a long distance hike. As well, clothing items made from natural fibers are less flammable and more breathable. Cover as much of your exposed skin as possible by wearing long pants and sleeves.

Wear your carry-on bag. That well-packed carry-on bag isn’t going to do you much good if you don’t have it with you.  To keep your hands free for other tasks, I recommend a backpack or cross-body bag for your most important survival items.

Bring snacks.  I always pack things like Clif bars, nuts, and dried fruit.  The more snacks you have, the longer you can wait before eating your fellow passengers, Andes-soccer-team style.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The Final Word

There is nothing remarkable about this list and, as a matter of fact, it is fairly mundane and undoubtedly includes things you routinely pack along as a matter of course.  Still, if there is just one item you have overlooked – and you need that item – you will be happy to have it along to help you out of a jam or to make your journey more secure.

And just for the record?  I pack all of these items and a whole lot more when I travel.  I can get by with just a couple of pairs of shoes but not without my preps. You just never know.

Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!

Coming To America: The Hoarding Begins: Greeks Rush To Grocery Stores, Gas Stations and ATMs In Anticipation of Collapse

greece-grocery(Pictured: Greeks rush to grocery stores to stock up on food and supplies ahead of bank holidays)

What happens when your country collapses to such an extent that it can no longer pay its debts, your banking system is bankrupt and the populace loses confidence in its government’s ability to mitigate the crisis?

The events taking place in Greece provide some insight and are a harbinger of things to come in America.

It was a seemingly normal Sunday — except it was anything but normal.

For many people in Athens, it was time to prepare for an approaching storm. A short walk from Plaka, a line of people waited to withdraw cash from an A.T.M., hours before the official announcement that banks would be closed starting on Monday. Some bank machines in central Athens had run out of money or were out of service, as screens blamed “technical difficulties.”

Elsewhere, some people had started hoarding gasoline and groceries. “We don’t know what the new day will bring,” said Katerina Vorreadi, who was among a group of retirees waiting in line outside the National Bank of Greece on Saturday night.

Source:

Uncertainty breeds panic and if there’s anything that will get people lining up at local venues that provide essential services like money exchange and foodstuffs, it’s the fear of not being able to acquire those items when they’re needed most.

And while some will argue that America is an advanced economy and Greece is not even on the same playing field, the fact is that as a country we are much worse off. In a country where nearly 100 million people are dependent on government monthly government benefits just to survive, even a short-term financial shock could lead to widespread panic.

But how likely is such an event?

Well, according to Representative Brad Sherman, during the height of the 2008 crisis that if taxpayer funds weren’t used to bail out the system to the tune of trillions of dollars that we would literally have tanks patrolling the streets of America.

Many of us were told in private conversations that if we voted against this bill on Monday, that the sky would fall, the market would drop two or three thousands points the first day, another couple thousand the second day, and a few members were even told that there would be martial law in America if we voted no.

House Representative Brad Sherman (D-California)
Debate on the House Floor, October 2, 2008

It was a testament to just how bad things were and how much worse they could have gotten. But more importantly, it shows just how close to the brink of total collapse our nation was… and still remains.

Just this week the Bank of International Settlements – essentially the central bank for the world’s central banks – said that governments and banks  because they used up their ammunition fighting the last one.

Keep in mind that these are the people that essentially control the monetary policy of the entire world. And they just said that once the next set of dominoes starts tipping over they aren’t going to be able to stop it.

So the reality of the situation is that not only is this contagion soon to reach America, there will be no stopping it when it does.

In his latest article Michael Snyder of warns that Americans are woefully unprepared for such a scenario.

While over 70% of people fear an economic crisis is coming, of Americans have actually taken .

Should America be faced with the same situation as Greece, we can fully expect similar results here.

greece-atms(Pictured: Greeks line up at ATMs. Withdrawal limits were set to about $75 per day)

People will rush ATM’s in the hopes of getting cash, but like Greece, they’ll be met with restrictions allowing them to withdraw just $75 a day.

They’ll make their way to grocery stores hoping to buy a food supply for a week or two while things settle down, but they’ll be met with long lines and empty shelves, much like we’ve seen during previous emergencies.

greece-shelves(Greek grocery stores quickly running out of food. Picture via )

And, just as we saw in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, of our systems of commerce people will be facing starvation and supply shortages.

Tess Pennington, author of , explains the of a breakdown and notes that by day three, things get very dangerous:

Multiple factors contribute to societal breakdowns including failure of adequate government response, population density, citizens taking advantage of the and overwhelmed emergency response teams.

3-5 days following a disaster is the bewitching hour. During this short amount of time, the population slowly becomes a powder keg full of angry, desperate citizens. A good example is the chaos that ensued in New Orleans following the absence of action from the local government or a timely effective federal response in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In such troubled times, people were forced to fend for themselves and their families, by any means necessary. This of Hurricane Katrina effectively illustrates “the breakdown,” and within three days, the citizens of New Orleans descended into anarchy, looting and murder ().

If this scenario isn’t bad enough, at the end of this time frame, there will be an increase in illnesses due to cramped living quarters from emergency shelters, , and . In the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake, sanitation- related epidemics became a large concern for the disaster victims. In fact, the outbreak erupted into the world’s largest cholera epidemic despite a huge international mobilization still dealing with the effects of the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake.

Source:

We can pretend like everything is peachy and that happy times are back again. But even a precursory look at what’s happening around the world suggests that the global economy is derailing. Greece has essentially collapsed (for the fourth time in a decade) and China’s stock markets are .

The situation remains fluid, but dire, because if China and Europe go, guess who’s next?

Americans aren’t ready for it. As Michael Snyder notes in his aforementioned article, most people don’t have any emergency cash, or even a three day supply of food on hand in case something happens.

Now, consider what happens when banks shut their doors for a week like they have done in Greece. Next, imagine a scenario where confidence in the U.S. dollar is lost and foreign creditors pull out.

The result is an intense, almost immediate collapse of the system as we have come to know it. When the debt bubble bursts, notes analyst Greg Mannarino, :

Millions upon millions of people are going to die on a world-wide scale when the debt bubble bursts. And I’m saying when not if…

When resources become more and more scarce we’re going to see countries at war with each other. People will be scrambling… in a worst case scenario… doing everything that they can to survive… to provide for their family and for themselves.

We could be wrong, of course. But what if we’re not?

Amazing Affordable Force Multipliers – Part 2, by Tupreco

EMP-Proof Your Radio Comms With a USGI Ammo Can Inexpensively

How can you EMP-proof select comm gear for under $100? You can do this more easily than you might think. Radio comms are radio-based systems that can communicate across distances from a few miles up to thousands of miles, under the right atmospheric conditions. In order of range (and cost) these radio comms include walkie talkies using the Family Radio Service (FRS) and the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS). Next, at higher cost and more range, is citizens band radio or CB. At the top end in price and range is Amateur Radio, fondly known as Ham radio. Be aware that all cell-based devices, like cell phones and tablets, are also radio comm systems, but they all rely completely on third parties that are under government regulation to keep the system operational. For that reason we will limit ourselves to direct two-way radio issues only.

The rugged storage capabilities provided by are obvious. But an amazing non-obvious feature is their ability to act as a shielding enclosure to protect your sensitive comm and other sensitive electronics from an EMP event. Large-scale high energy atmospheric transients can come from a solar coronal mass ejection (CME) striking earth’s atmosphere or a strong electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from a localized EMP device or a nuclear detonation. Regardless the source, the effect is that the same potential for damage exists when power lines or antennas convert these high-energy fields into current flow through the attached wires or other conductors. The result is significant damage to connected circuit components that are unable to withstand the overload. This can all take place in a few milliseconds.

Fortunately, an electrically conductive solid metal box like an ammo can has an inherent property called the Faraday cage effect that can shield its contents from large external transients. Michael Faraday realized in 1836 that an electrostatic electric field would not penetrate a metal enclosure. Later it was determined that same effect prevents penetration from other energy fields such as electric, magnetic or radio frequency. The Faraday cage works because the traveling energy field transforms into an induced voltage and current flow across the surface of the conductor (in this case the metal box) to ground or eventually dissipates into the surrounding area without affecting the contents of our box which is now our Faraday cage. Secondary grounding is not essential. However, make sure no conductor like a power cord or antenna is connected through or penetrates the enclosure or all shielding bets are off. Those penetrating conductors will act as an antenna also and expose the contents to unwanted energy spikes. To clarify your own understanding of EMP and RF shielding I direct you to Don White’s excellent book on the subject.

To implement this idea, put your radio gear or other sensitive electronics inside the box and make sure it is closed tightly. Making sure the top and bottom are electrically connected with an ohm meter is a nice for peace of mind. Ammo cans usually contain a rubber seal between top and bottom but connect electrically through the hinge pins. You may want to attach a small gauge lead as a redundancy between the top and bottom. A decent alternative to an ammo can would be to use a large zip style static shielding bag that is kept tightly closed. The zip close style sized for a 5-gallon bucket would be a good choice. If you use such a bag, then the outside box composition doesn’t matter, because the conductive foil layer inside the bag is the actual Faraday cage.

Plan to purchase some assortment of spare walkies, handheld or mobile Ham set, cell phone, and solar charger and have them properly stowed. I use two deep .50 cal cans to hold four with charger bases ($60 total for both sets), a , and CB handheld (bought used with antennas for $100), two dual band handheld Ham radios (bought new on Amazon with spare batteries, hands-free mike headsets, upgraded antennas for $125), and a 50W dual-band Ham radio (like-new for $300 at a Hamfest) with a 15 Amp hr battery (new on Amazon for $30). The Kenwood can also double as a relay repeater that can extend the range of the Baofengs to about 30 miles. The (GoalZero $75) is to keep it all topped off and is rated at 7 watts with outputs of USB 5V and jacks for 12V. Make sure you have all the adapters you need as well. It is snug, but it all fits. The total of what I paid for the gear is shown. Adding the cost of an antenna for the Kenwood, some rechargeable AAs for the handhelds, and the two deep 50 cal cans off Craigslist cost me a total of just under $775. I consider the extra investment in stowed gear some of the least expensive insurance available, because the ability to be back on the air the very “day after” for short range comms at the retreat or over some distances with the Kenwood Ham radio to reach others will be priceless.

Wireless Video Security System Using Smart Phones

Would remote motion-activated images sent to your smart phone for $100 interest you? I thought so. We are now officially a generation of screen junkies. Recent research tells us that the average adult uses their smart phone or tablet to do an average 224 tasks per day, and that doesn’t consider the impact of new apps and features added with each upgrade. I’m not here to debate the culture of mobile screen fixation but to highlight an app that can turn the familiar mobile device, a mixed network of Androids and iPhones, into a sweet motion-activated video surveillance system. It’s not just your smart phone anymore; it becomes your pocket motion-sensitive wireless video security system, and it’s as functional as it is inexpensive.

It started when I got my backup phone. I had reported a roadside emergency via 911 in late 2012 and discovered that law enforcement had locked my cell phone to monitor the audio until they were satisfied things were resolved. This is now standard practice everywhere. The next day I researched and bought a backup smart phone. Specifically, it was an purchased on Amazon for $25 with three months service and 600 minutes air time. If I ever have another emergency and call 911, I now have a way to make important calls to my family, lawyer, or other emergency responder if needed. Now I renew annually and get 600 minutes of airtime and 12 months of service for $99. Sometime later, I saw a free motion detector app called Motion Detector Pro from MVA on Google Play. MVA also has a version for the iPhone, but I feel a lot better leaving a $25 Android phone as an unattended camera than I do a $200 iPhone.

Select the correct version for your iPhone or Android 2.2 or higher. Next, download and install the app. Only the device used for surveillance needs the downloaded app. Open the app and choose your options from the settings tab to setup your device as a remote surveillance camera with motion detection functionality. Once the adjustable motion threshold is triggered, it sends an email or a text message with a linked picture to whatever device or email account you specify. It gives you remote video capability to monitor an area of your choosing with your smart phone and get notification if a trigger event occurs. I will leave the possibilities to you.

Once enabled, it will take a picture when the camera sees a movement and send it to an email or another phone. The sensitivity and area for motion detect are user defined. You can remotely start, stop, and reset it by using a password-protected text message. It also indicates real-time on the phone’s display where the movement is detected. There is also a user-enabled stealth mode, which closes the app so the phone looks off as soon as it is touched. You can also store the surveillance images on the cloud or locally on the phone’s SD-card. I have used these features, and they all seem to work on my inexpensive LG phone.

Using this system made it possible for a friend to ride his $800 mountain bike to work and safely park it unattended. The phone points outside his office window with a clear view of the bike. Several times he has been alerted on his daily carry cell phone with an image of someone “looking” at it up close. When he immediately shows up, they either ask questions or move along, but now everyone knows it is being watched, which is very cool. On a final note, the app is ad-supported, but you can make the ads go away for a nominal donation via the app’s settings menu.

Make sure you can power everything off-grid. Keep in mind that you won’t be multiplying much force with the devices described here without some way to power them. Much has been written on Survivalblog about making sure your battery-operated devices and portable communication gear can be recharged in the absence of grid power. Off-grid alternatives can be easily managed in the short term with a generator, as long as fuel is available. My favorite option is solar from a fixed or small portable system. It will of course need to be EMP-proofed. Also, there is thermoelectric power generation, like the unit. It works, but it is a low power solution. Wind or hydro power are additional ways to keep your stuff charged. Rather than replicate the detail of the choices here, search “off grid power” on SurvivalBlog, and read some of the excellent articles there. I have two linkable , a 1500W portable solar system mounted on a 6 x 14 utility trailer, and several portable folding chargers from 7W to 125W, and lots of . Just remember the old joke: Q. “What do they call a flashlight without batteries?” A. “A hammer.”

To prepare it, all you have to do is add 1 1/2 cups (Sometimes 2 depending on the bowl you use) of boiling water to it and you’re done. Yup,that’s it!

I have put together a short video to guide you in preparation and a list of the ingredients are listed below it. This meal is created using Dried Foods and I have to admit, once it is re-hydrated you really can’t tell that is what it is. It tastes so fresh and good. My husband and kids couldn’t tell and my husband even let some of the guys at work try it and it was a hit.

Ingredients:

Makes 2 full cups of Chicken Fiesta Rice. You can double up the ingredients or even triple them if you have a large family. I can feed four people (2 adults, 2 teenage girls) when I double it up.

Freeze Dried Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup
  • 1/2 cup
  • 1/4 cup
  • 1/4 cup , optional
  • 1/4 cup, optional
  • 2/3 cups INSTANT brown rice
  • 1 tablespoon (Note; If using onion flakes use only 1 teaspoon.)

Spices:

  • 1 1/2 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin
  • 1/4 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/8 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1/8 to 1/4  tsp salt, optional
  • 2 tsp Chicken Bouillon or Granules
  • 1/4 tsp Dried Oregano
  • 1/2 tsp OR 1/8 tsp regular dried Cilantro

Optional Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp Chia Seeds or Ground Flax Seed
  • 1/4 tsp minced,

To Prepare:

  • Mix everything together in a bowl that will hold at least 2 cups of water.
  • Boil 1 1/2 cups of water
  • Pour water into bowl and stir so that all ingredients get wet and spices are blended well
  • Cover and let sit for 10 minutes

It is that easy. The only thing to wash are the bowls and spoons. :)

Storing Meal in Mason Jars:

If you are going to store a few of these already prepared meals in jars on the shelf it is imperative that you use an to seal the jar or a () so the meat does not go rancid and make you sick. Eat within 3 months.

If you are making some up in baggies then you will need to store them in the refrigerator and use within 3 weeks. If you store them in the pantry they should be used with in 10 days.

Keeping It Spicy,

Preppers, survivalists and Hurricane Sandy: A mini-documentary by Mike Adams

This mini-documentary reveals why preppers and survivalists are owed a huge apology by the mainstream media and the White House in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

If more people had prepared in advance, there wouldn't have been such an emergency after the superstorm struck.
