When you hear your weather report mention a hurricane coming your way, chances are youâll be panicking in nine out of ten cases. The last thing you want to be in such a moment is unprepared for what comes ahead, so you need to make sure you have all things ready long before a disaster like this comes knocking down your front door. With a little bit of effort you will easily have a chance to prepare for such an event, at least boosting your chances to survive without too much damage and with your life intact. The following tips will give you more details you can use:
- Make sure you have a good insurance policy that covers your current state. You may want to add some flood insurance coverage as well since a storm may easily be more than just a hurricane, especially in areas near the ocean, as well as additional resources if your home becomes uninhabitable after a major storm.
- You also need to make a good home inventory so you can make filing claims a much easier task after a hurricane. Document the contents of the home you live in with a video camera, photos as well as an inventory list if possible, especially if you live in high risk areas and you need to watch out for storms.
- Work on protecting you property by installing some items around your home to counteract the effects of a hurricane on it. Hurricane shutters or at least plywood boards on your windows outside will help keep your home protected against high winds, but you will also need to install anchors and work on pre-drilling holes so you can put the latter up fast. Head and foot bolts for your doors will also give them additional sturdiness you can count on. If you need to, you can also use hurricane clips or straps to help hold the roof to the walls of your home. Above all, make sure you have a safe, hurricane-proof room capable of withstanding flying debris, high winds and impacts, preferably your basement with concrete walls and storm shutters to keep you alive through it.
- Get an emergency supply kit ready with some survival items prepared ahead of time so you can get through the storm if someone needs medical attention as well as food and water to make it through. You will need at least a two week supply of water ready at all times, as well as a supply of non-perishable food that lasts a long time for each and every member of your household, including your pets. A manual can opener, medical supplies, hygiene items and clothes, utensils, paper towels, flashlights, radio and batteries, sleeping bags, pillows, blankets, coolers, tarp for roof repair and other necessary items are a must as well.
- Never take risks to try to save material belongings if you need to evacuate the premises, especially if the storm is coming your way and you absolutely need to move. Value your life above all and stay safe. You may need some help with clearance of your damaged belongings after the storm, so looking for a property clearance company or waste removal company will be a good choice so you can deal with junk clearance in the end.
