During my first encounter with prepping I always planned with the big picture in mind, which was my family. I never really placed too much concern about the pets. Well, since we picked up a German Shepard dog that has all changed. Everyone considers their dogs as part of their family, and would like to take them along if a catastrophic event were to happen. So I ask you, is your dog prepped, have you done everything you possibly can to prepare your dog in the event that civilization as we know it were to fail. I know many people think âsure, I have all the food and necessities my dog can possibly needâ, which is great, and that’s a start. The one thing we all miss when it comes to preparing man’s best friend is training basic obedience. It may sound like it’s not a big deal, but you will be surprised to see how basic obedience training can make a big difference in various situations. Let’s take for example your family is stuck in a bad situation and there’s marauder’s breaking into houses, and you have no choice but to abandon the home on foot. Depending on your family size or the amount of stuff youâre taking with you, you don’t have the time to hook a leash or that extra hand to hold that leash. This is when simple obedience comes in. Now say your dog is proficient on a recall and heel, the dog will not leave your side because it’s been trained to and now your fear of possibly losing your family’s pet is no longer there.
The benefits of having a trained dog are endless when it comes to catastrophic events, every person in your family has a role when it comes to prepping so why not your dog. Ensure that your pet becomes a functional piece of the plan. If you want to go into advanced training you can also train a dog for protection or guarding which increases your dog’s value to your family and becomes an asset. You know you can trust your dog, but you can’t trust strangers when things go down. This is why I highly encourage preppers with dogs to train them, because youâre doing the best thing you can to increase your dog’s survivability. When you include your dog into your family and give it a role this strengthens they’re bond with the family/pack, especially working dogs they know when they are being included and have a purpose. Not all dogs can be trained to the same level this is why breed choice and knowing your dogs abilities play a big role. Most dogs can be trained to have some kind of purpose, but only you can determine what purpose your dog shall have. Be it a working dog or a companion dog they all can be trained to do something that has value to you and your family. So I ask is your K9 prepped ?
