Remember the song From Simon and Garfunkel âParsley, Sage Rosemary and Thyme? This is one of most used herbs as a medicine, throughout time. References from Italy, Greece, and other countries speak of doctors of the thyme using it in many healing preparations. It is referenced to be stronger than peroxide.
Okay about Thyme; In one reference book I have more than 9 chemotypes listed. That means the chemistry of each plant is little bit different. Thyme is in the Labiatae family. Thyme mainly comes from the Mediterranean. The plants can be wild-crafted, organically grown, and natural grown. They are mostly steam distilled from the whole herb. The most common ones you will find on the open market are Thyme Linalol, White Thyme and Red Thyme.
Would you like to know what the differences are? There are many different subspecies and each of these has a different chemistry. Thyme vulgaris T. has mostly thymol. It is chemically copied to make Listerine Mouthwash. This oil can be very irritating; it must be seriously diluted and isnât meant to be used internally. It stimulates the white blood cells so it is good for topical infections.
Here is a story: While trying to capture a feral cat my friend was bitten and scratched. She immediately poured straight Thyme vulgaris into the open wounds which were starting to bleed and swell up around the punctures, she than used helichrysum, and lavender as well. Under five minutes the swelling and redness was gone and the bleeding stopped. Her wounds healed in less than 24 hours. She said the Thyme vulgaris burned like Hades as she used it straight up, or neet, but the wound healed extremely well.
Thyme vulgaris, Linalol type: This oil is good for urogenital infections. In a spray itâs easy to use. It is my favorite because the Linalol chemotype is easier on the skin.
Thyme T. sylvestris also called Red Thyme, is a Spanish chemotype that is a crude distillate and White Thyme is a further distillation of the red thyme oil and can be adulterated.
Linalol is a sedative chemical. Thyme vulgaris Linalol can be used in fragrant applications where antiseptic skin care is used. The oil is in a chemical class with Bergamont, Lavender, Geranium, Rosewood, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree and Peppermint, as they have natural deodorant effects because they prevent bacteria build up.
Some uses of Thyme vulgaris L include:
External: bactericide, anti venomous, snake bites, parasiticide, boils, sores, dental oral hygiene, rheumatism, hair loss, flu, bronchitis, sinusitis (in combination with other oils), lice , scabies, insect and animal bites.
To use externally;Â .10% to 1.5% to one ounce carrier oil.
Recipe ideas:
Boils: 1 of tsp of Carrier: 3 drops Thyme l., 2 drops Lavender, 2 drops Chamomile R., use a Q-tip to put drops on affected area, donât touch with the hand treating the area and wash hands up to the elbows immediately after treatment.
Recipes are not given for internal use for legal reasons. If you want to use oils internally please research it first, then use with caution.
