Two years ago my family was homeless and we went from shelter to shelter, house-to-house. These were very painful, trying times when money was scarce and we had nowhere else to go.

That’s when I got into learning how to grow our own food, getting our own land, and being completely self-reliant off the grid. The complete breakdown of modern civilization as we know it may or may not ever come.

 

Mama what shall we eat?                                    

My main concern is the kids. If you have children you know that they wake up starving hungry every morning no matter how much they ate the night before due to their super non-human metabolisms. Having food storage is very important.

So you have food stored, but what do you do when it’s all gone?

Having items that you can barter or trade for food is a good idea. However, being able to grow your own food, go fishing or set traps for wild game is a skill everyone might want to perfect. It is good idea to have a body of water near your land, but keep in mind other people will be migrating from the big cities and they will be looking for food and water. They just might find your water source.

It will be a good idea for you to educate yourself in the areas of fishing, growing your own food, hunting, and trapping different types of wild animals. Me, I prefer to grow my own food because my wife and I have five hungry children. If you’re like us, you have huge grocery bills, especially if you have boys.

Daddy, how do we keep our food from getting spoiled?

So you grow your food, now you have to pick all of it and you have to store all of it once the harvest season hits. That way you will have a constant source of food for later. One thing I recommend is learning how to can and dehydrating your foods.

Mom I’m so thirsty do you have any water?

Water is the number 1 concern you will have during this type of situation. The human body has a 3-day window before it starts to shut down due to lack of water. Get yourself a good water purification system. Sometimes the system can be as simple as purification drops that you can drop into water to purify it, but many people make sure to have things such as life straws or counter top water filters.

One thing you can do is look for land that has water on it water wells or bodies of water. If there is a well, make sure that you have a way to pump out the water such as a generator or good pump. Make sure you get your paws on some water storage containers as well. Enough for at least 6 to 12 months.

Dad, we don’t have a stove how are we going to cook this stuff?

There are many ways to cook food in a SHTF type of situation.  Here are some sources of cooking that you can look further into:

– Solar cookers, wood burning stoves, rocket stoves, volcano stove or grills. Make sure and load up on multiple ways to start a fire.

Mom, our home has been taken over by gangs and criminals now what?

We need to find shelter immediately. During an SHTF situation our homes and our business will most likely will be compromised. When people get hungry and thirsty and there is no food or water available they come looking for yours. You don’t want to be home when this happens if you are home be prepared to defend it to the death.

When the collapse of modern civilization happens you can forget about paying a mortgage. If you have a mortgage that means you do not own your home the bank does. It is paramount to have a backup plan.

My suggestion to you is to start researching alternate forms of shelter during a SHTF collapse of modern civilization situation. Look up bush craft and outdoor survival techniques. Prepping and survival can be costly if you want to get the good stuff. I personally have an online business that I use to generate income for my families survival gear.
